“BECAUSE I SAID SO”
Did you ever hear that as a kid? Because I said so.
Oh, how I hated those words. I always wanted to know “why“.
My father got extremely frustrated with me because whenever he would tell me to do this or do that I would always want to know why, especially if I saw no point in it.
My middle initial is the letter “J”. No name, just an initial.
One day he said that instead of a “J”, my middle initial should have been a “‘W“. I asked him “Why“, to which he responded, “there you go again.
If you were one of those kids who always wanted to know why, you probably still do.
And if you seemed to always get the “because I said so” response, is it possible that has influenced our willingness to believe what God tells us we should do and should not do?
If you believe words really matter, think about it. Something in the human psyche simply resists being commanded to do anything.
And why?
Because for many of us, it conjures up the old because I said so tape.
And why?
Was it not because we felt entitled to know why? It’s like, if we know why, it is a little easier to accept
Maybe that is why every one of God’s commands is followed by a reason why….in the form of a promise. If you DO this, this will happen. Â If you DON’T DO this, this will happen. Let’s look at a few.
Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28 & 29)
Seek and you shall find. Ask and it will be given to you. Knock and it will be opened to you.”
The whole Bible is replete with answers (reasons why) to God’s commands.
“But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. ()Deuteronomy 4:29
“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.” (Deuteronomy 11:26-28)
We humans want a rational God. God is not rational.
GOD….IS….GOD!
Let us pray that God will allow us to accept his commands simply because He said so.
Because HE said so…. is reason enough.
OH! REALLY? Hmm….
OK.
